GC with Flame Ionization Detector

The GCxGC offers us the power to further resolve our chromatography in two time scales , two dimensions so to say. TheĀ  LECO GCxGC-FID system uses their proprietary ChromaTOF software which allows separation of coeluting and complex peaksĀ  which cannot be easily resolved using a single detector or a traditional Gas Chromatography approach.

Two-dimensional gas chromatography occurs by the repeated and re-injection of effluent from one chromatographic column into a second column of orthogonal phase. The cycle of refocusing and re-injection is matched to the time required for compounds to elute from the second GC column, resulting in separation of compounds across a plane, rather than just along a line. With our GCxGC system this is accomplished with a dual-stage, quad-jet thermal modulator positioned between the two columns. The software allows for classification of observed peaks based on functional groups which is key to chemical kinetic study of fuels and studying ignition precursors.
